Every Day is Barley Day

A mere three months ago, in the heat of late July, I was blessed to have made a new best friend. She was undoubtedly the cutest girl I had ever seen. Soft brown locks, piercing green eyes, and a spunky personality that could stop even grown men dead in their tracks. One glance at her pout, her prance, and her moments of excitement completely drew me in. I loved her instantly and so our journey began.

I never knew that a little chocolate lab could so catastrophically change my life, but since that sizzling summer evening nothing has ever been the same. In the words of the great Mr. Darcy, "She has bewitched me, body and soul." Sometimes I just stare at her in amazement. How can a being, a dog at that, have created such an impact on my heart? It wasn't until I started truly studying my emotions that I derived a reasoning...

Barley Day loves me unconditionally. Literally not a moment of the day goes by that she's not overwhelmed with joy to see me. If I go to the bathroom she wants to join. If I watch TV she lays on my lap. When I type at my computer she snuggles my feet (such as now). You should see her reaction to me walking in the front door... Last week at the age of four months (and almost completely potty trained), she peed a little with excitement. That is love, people! The can't live without you, miss you all the time, pee your pants kind-of-love.

My sister will laugh when she reads this, because, umm... who is this obsessed with their dog? And well... the answer is me and probably a lot of dog owners for that matter. Johnson and Johnson have coined the phrase, "having a baby changes everything" and in my little world, Barley is my baby. At the age of 23 years old I am one proud mama of the furry light in my life and spend moment to moment waiting to cuddle her.

Barley and her favorite toy, Turtle.
Keep your eye on news stands for the year 2028. The memoir "Barley and Me" is in production as we speak.
